40+ years in the EWI industry

Celebrating Women in Construction

There’s always been a perception that ‘construction is a man’s world’ of heavy manual labour, but those who work in the industry know that’s not always the case and the training team at Wetherby works hard to offer equal opportunities to the next generation of building professionals, and educate them on the variety of careers that exist within the sector, regardless of their gender.

As the UK’s leading EWI manufacturer, Wetherby feels it’s important to reach students while they are still researching options available to them, which is why the company works closely with colleges and universities across the country, to provide valuable industry training, knowledge and work experience to construction students.

Wetherby’s training team were delighted to hear the news and offer sincere congratulations to Rachel Howarth, from Lower Broughton in Salford, on becoming the first person in the UK to achieve an NVQ Level 3 in External Wall Insulation at Salford City College. A fantastic accomplishment, which will hopefully inspire other women to consider a career in construction. [You can read the local news article here].

women-in-constructionBut it is isn’t just students that can benefit from Wetherby’s experience, women looking for a new challenge will be surprised at the opportunities that will come from training in EWI installation. The EWI sector has exploded over the last few years, following the introduction of government energy efficiency schemes, and despite these policies continually changing, EWI remains one of the most effective ways to improve domestic energy efficiency.

There are still over seven million households in the UK that could benefit from EWI and so the industry needs skilled professionals to help deliver these measures. Whether looking to re-train or upskill, Wetherby offers a wide range of EWI training courses to equip attendees with the relevant product knowledge and skills to hit the ground running on site.

Wetherby’s training manager, Steve Dewberry comments: “With the widely acknowledged skills shortage in the construction industry, it is vital that we are demonstrating the opportunities a career in construction can offer young tradespeople, regardless of their gender.

“We are proud to have had many ladies attend our training courses, who are now accredited EWI applicators, working on site installing our systems. These women are fantastic ambassadors for the industry and we’re encouraging other young women to look at what they have achieved and follow in their footsteps. Rachel Howarth is a perfect example of a young lady who started her career going down one path, yet made an easy transition into the world of EWI because she showed great determination and commitment”.
