Today there has been some positive news for the UK and Energy Efficiency industry as the United Kingdom has signed the world’s first comprehensive climate change treaty to limit global temperature rises.
Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson this afternoon signed the official ratification documents, which will now be filed with the UN’s climate change secretariat. Making the UK the 111th country to officially sign up to the historic climate change treaty.
Speaking from the COP22 Climate Summit in Marrakesh, Climate Change and Industry Minister Nick Hurd said ratification of the agreement would give a further boost to a UK low carbon economy already worth over £46bn.
“The UK is ratifying the historic Paris Agreement so that we can help to accelerate global action on climate change and deliver on our commitments to create a safer, more prosperous future for us all,” he said.
“COP22 in Marrakesh is an important milestone which marks the shift from aspiration to implementation. We are going to use this positive momentum to grow the UK low-carbon sector, which is already worth over £46bn, as we continue to provide secure, affordable and clean energy to our families and businesses.”
The UK has also submitted a climate action plan to the UN, which is largely in line with its existing Climate Change Act and its goal of slashing emissions 80 per cent by 2050.
