Wetherby’s NEW Internal Wall Insulation System success for Newport Homes

40 Dewstow Street is one of the first properties to benefit from Wetherby’s new BBA accredited and ECO3 compliant Internal Wall Insulation System (IWI) covered by GDGC’s 25 year warranty.

Dewstow Street is one of several properties currently owned by Pobl Group in Newport which in recent years has become derelict and been left empty. As part of a regeneration scheme, Pobl have reinvested to bring these much needed homes back in line with Welsh Housing Quality Standards and back on the rental market.

The properties required extensive upgrades internally and externally and with a recorded Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating below 65, it meant solid wall insulation was a key part in the refurbishment plans to minimise fuel poverty and provide future tenants with energy efficient homes.

Wetherby Building Systems were approached to provide a solution for these properties, however, it was clear the most beneficial result would be a ‘hybrid’ theory meaning a combination of Internal Wall Insulation and External Wall Insulation (EWI) would be used in conjunction to maximise the energy efficiency throughout. Due to current planning constraints on the front of the property, Wetherby’s Internal Wall Insulation system was specified leaving the rear to feature Wetherby’s External Wall Insulation.

Wetherby’s new IWI system has been specifically designed to overcome challenges set by planning constraints and utilises a high performance rigid Phenolic insulation board, bonded to 12.5mm plasterboard. Dewstow Street used an insulation thickness of 62.5mm which was directly fixed on to 25mm timber battens, then skimmed with internal plaster. The rear of the property was then completed with EWI featuring 90mm Enhanced EPS Insulation and finished with Wetherby’s high impact, durable, dry dash aggregate to provide an attractive and weatherproof fresh new look to the property and community.

On completion of the project the property has improved the EPC rating from grade D to grade C meeting current building regulation requirements and meaning future residents could save as much as £145 per year on average benefiting from a warmer, weather resistant homes.
