Broadway Halls is located in Dudley on a prominent site adjacent to the local parkland and within the heart of the residential community.
The site demanded an architecture that was distinctive and contemporary, with the building replacing derelict student halls of residence for Dudley University to make way for a new 83 bed care home providing residential, nursing and EMI dementia care for the elderly.
DWA Architects designed the facades to complement the surrounding 1930’s housing and the facades, clad in a crisp white render set upon a stone plinth take cues from Dudley Castle on the horizon.
The building straddles the Dudley Canal Tunnel, 40m below, and due to the size and ground conditions of the site, a piled solution was the most appropriate. The implementation of structural elements to the building superstructure creates a bridge over the tunnel to mitigate and dissipate the loadings upon it.
A Wetherby Insulated Render System was specified for the exterior facades. 100mm EPS insulation was mechanically fixed to the steel frame structure with Mineral Wool firebreaks installed at each floor level. A basecoat and reinforcing mesh were applied to the EPS insulation followed by a layer of Wetherby 1.5mm Silicone ‘K’ Render in brilliant white to give the contemporary finished required by the client. Finished U-value 0.30W/m²K.
