Designed by Powell Dobson Architects, Mariners Quay is an ambitious development of 87 apartments, 15 mews and terraced houses alongside Newport’s river front.
Innovatively built to incorporate the latest environmental technology the homes include features such as triple glazing, water efficient fittings and rainwater harvesting to reduce mains water consumption, an on-site electricity generator and sun boxes to capture the warmth from the sun.
To achieve the high standard of insulation required, a Wetherby Insulated Render System incorporating 160mm EPS insulation was specified, this gave a finished U-value of 0.15W/m²K. Combined with the other energy saving initiatives the residents weekly heating fuel bills are expected to be below £5.
The EPS insulation was encapsulated in white Wetherby 1.5mm Silicone ‘K’ render to give a crisp modern finish to these groundbreaking properties.
The project has won the Constructing Excellence in Wales 2010 award for low/zero carbon and the CIBSE South Wales Sustainable Project of the Year 2010. Based on BRE statistics only 400 residences have currently achieved interim design stage certification at Code Level 5 meaning that currently (Jan 2011) Mariners Quay represents nearly 20% of all Code Level 5 and 6 properties in England and Wales on one site.
