The three identical blocks in Smethwick, which can clearly be seen from the M5 / M6 motorways have been given a bright new makeover after a Wetherby Insulated Render System was installed by MIB Facades.
The flats were originally built of brickwork and were notoriously difficult to heat. Sandwell Homes wanted to improve not only the appearance of the flats but also to improve the building’s ability to retain heat and therefore significantly reduce energy bills for the residents.
The solution agreed upon was the Wetherby Silicone Insulated Render System. 90mm of Mineral Fibre insulation was specified as this offered sufficient thermal properties to reduce the building’s U-Value to 0.35W/m²K and also added increased protection to the building in the event of a fire.
Basecoat, primer and a brilliant white 1.5mm silicone texture was then applied to encapsulate the insulation and provide a crisp, clean finish. In addition to the striking white render, brightly coloured Trespa panels were used on the balconies to completely transform the appearance of the blocks.
Throughout the refurbishment project a Resident Action Group worked closely with Sandwell Homes and residents have commented on how much brighter and warmer the flats are and how pleasing they are to come home to.
