Central to the school’s vision is the concept of community and Silverdale School in Barnsley sees itself as an outward looking school, equipped to develop the global citizens of tomorrow whilst recognising the immediate needs of all its learners and the local community.
Designing the new building, which is twice the size of the old school, was a long term project and involved the school’s Subject Leaders who played a key role in the design of their areas. It was vital that they created an environment for teaching and learning that would really liberate both students and teachers and enable the school to ‘raise its game’ further.
The steel frame structure was faced with 10mm building boards onto which Wetherby 130mm Mineral Wool was mechanically fixed. The utilisation of Mineral Wool as the main insulant naturally negated the use of additional fire breaks. K&A basecoat and a layer of reinforcing mesh was applied to the Mineral Wool, followed with a layer of 1.5mm Silicone ‘K’ render in white, which with its weatherproof and self-cleaning properties gave an outstanding finish to the modern building and will help protect it for many years to come. Finished U-value 0.27 W/m²K.
